Bob was born in Dixfield, Maine to Hilde and Karl Fries in 1929, but moved to the Rhinelander area at 10 years old. Even after polio in 1955 he was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing with lifelong friends. He could build and fix everything.
Bob married Betty Hurning in 1948 and they had 69 years, 7 months of marriage. They loved their Apperson house on the Wisconsin River that Bob built in 1959-60. On Fourth of July weekends they watched 50+ float boats go by.
Bob was on the original Nicolet College Board that pushed to get a true campus in Rhinelander. He was Newbold town treasurer for 30+ years and started an employee assistance program for the paper mill.
He was preceded in death by Betty in 2018, his parents Karl and Hilde, one son Robert Jr., brothers Karl, Richard, and John, two sisters, Martha and Anne Pope.
He is survived by one sister, Gladys Eternicka of Onalaska, one brother Ben of Sacramento, Calif., several nieces and nephews, and one daughter, Dawn (Mitch) Olson who will now miss both of them every day of her life. Bob was the best Dad ever.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simply Cremation through Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists.
