Eugene Polkowski, age 85, of Rhinelander, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020 at Tomahawk Health Services.

Gene was born in Rockford, Ill. on June 20, 1935, to Frank and Katherine (Sowa) Polkowski.

He was raised in the Rockford area and was a 1953 graduate of Winnebago High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines proudly serving his country from 1954 until 1956. He was united in marriage on Sept. 7, 1957 to Carol Perry at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rhinelander. The couple settled in Rockford where Gene began his career with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for five years. He then transferred to being a rural route carrier for the County of Winnebago for the next 30 years, retiring in 1986.

He also ran the family farm after his father passed away, raising beef cattle and hogs for 20 years. In 1992, Gene and Carol moved to Rhinelander living on Lake George. He was employed with Schwan's as a salesman for several years and then as a real estate agent with Wilderness Realty in Sugar Camp.

Gene was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Rockford, Ill., the Lions Club in Sugar Camp and a member of the Pelican Community Club. He had been a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church and later at St. Kunegunda of Poland Catholic Church.

Gene enjoyed golfing, fishing, snowmobiling and spending time on Lake George. He also enjoyed bi-weekly cards with his friends and playing dice at family gatherings, which he missed very much after suffering a bad stroke in 2017.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Carol; sons; Jeffrey (Lori) Polkowski of Rockford, Ill., David (Deborah) Polkowski of Rhinelander; daughters, Marcia Singery of Elgin, Ill. and Karen (Dave) Polkowski-Armstrong of Rockford, Ill.; and sisters Helen Cook of Troy, Mich. and Lucille Halfacre of Moore, S.C. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son Andrew Polkowski, brothers Joe, Stan, Frank and John Polkowski and by a sister, Mary Eytalis.

The visitation and Memorial Mass will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions in honor of Gene may be given to ALZ.org
