As a result, in place of the usual ceremony at the Oneida County Courthouse, Rhinelander veterans groups decided to hold an open house Wednesday at the Veterans Center.
"We considered that we might be putting our staff at risk or each other at risk," said Oneida County Veterans Service Officer Tammy Javenkoski, explaining the decision to cancel the ceremony.
She said the veterans organizations came up with the idea of having the open house at the Veterans Center on Veterans Day.
"They have been talking about having an event like this so they could recruit membership," she said.
Javenkoski and assistant veterans service officer Jason Dailey were invited to take part so they could provide veterans with benefit information.
"I love any opportunity to tell veterans and their spouses about benefits," Javenkoski said, noting that the majority of the veterans who attended stopped by in the morning.
"I've talked to several veterans, and I think some of the service organizations got some new members," she said.
For entertainment, a choir from James Williams Middle School provided a virtual performance that was played over the center's sound system.
Javenkoski said anyone who missed the open house, and has questions about benefits or veterans organizations, can contact her at 715-369-6127.
"We can always talk veterans benefits over the phone," she said. "Or if they are interested in joining a service organization, or the honor guard, we can give them a point of contact."
