Local residents went to the polls en masse last Tuesday to vote in what was described as the most consequential election in modern history.

According to Rhinelander City Clerk Val Foley and Oneida County and Town of Crescent Clerk Tracy Hartman, it's likely new turnout records were set.

"Based on the total number of registered voters we had as of Monday, with the voter turnout we had Tuesday, (the county is) at 92 percent," Hartman told the River News Friday, adding that the percentage would likely be adjusted again after same-day voter registration data is included.

"The (town) clerks were seeing large turnouts," she added. "Voters were very invested in making sure their vote counted this election, which is great to see."

According to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, Rhinelander saw approximately 4,000 votes cast by people who were previously registered, and between 500-600 same-day registrations.

"We had 651 voters in (Rhinelander) district 5," Foley noted. "That's a lot."

"I don't think we've been quite this high (before). I'd have to look at past elections," she added. "I know Newbold said they were in the 90 percentiles."

Same-day registration numbers were also up locally, a statistic that appeared to mirror the rest of the state.

"Every county that I've talked to, there was a high number of voter registrations," Hartman said.

In the Town of Crescent, where Hartman serves as town clerk,107 people registered to vote at the polling place.

"Which is huge for us," Hartman observed.

Foley was impressed with the city's new polling location, the new Hodag Dome.

"Oh, it was wonderful. It really was a very good place to hold an election," she said. "The school district just went over and above making sure we had (personal protective equipment), whatever we needed, sanitizing stuff. They were very good with tacking 'what do you need.'"
