Warren was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for activities such as hunting, fishing, hockey, and skiing - just to name a few. Warren frequently would visit his childhood friend, Brian Mangerson, in Alaska for bear hunting, salmon fishing and Cessna flying - both were licensed pilots with a love for travel. Growing up, he spent much of his free time at his parent's cabin on Black Lake, working on his uncle's resort and hunting the family's land. He was a ski instructor and a member of the Ski Patrol Search and Rescue at Mt. Rose, Nevada during his 20s.
One of Warren's most memorable qualities was his huge smile coupled with an infectious laugh. He was always able to command attention with his enthusiastic storytelling, jokes and life lessons. It is no surprise that he easily built many friendships, young and old alike, given his knack to connect to people in these ways.
Warren married Tammy (Mangerson) Wendt in 1988 and became stepfather to Richard Wold who was 8 years old at the time. Later, Warren and Tammy gave birth to a baby girl named Jessica. Although Warren and Tammy eventually divorced, they maintained an ongoing relationship to focus on the upbringing of their two children. He is remembered as a proud, fun-loving Dad who offered unwavering support and encouragement to his children.
Warren was a loving brother to Kimberly (Owen) Gassaway of Lenoir City, Tenn.; exceptional father to Jessica (Nick) Santoyo of Copperas Cove, Texas and Richard (Colleen) Wold of Plainfield, Ill.; and loving grandfather to his six grandchildren: Jackson, Nicholas, Kaylynn, Chelsea, Matthew and Dylan.
To say Warren was a dedicated and passionate grandfather would be a gross understatement; the impact he had on their lives was as great, if not greater, as the impact he had on his two children.
The hole that Warren has left in the lives of all he has touched is unexplainable and unimaginable. His wings may have been ready but our hearts were not.
Details will be forthcoming for services scheduled in spring 2021, in Rhinelander, to celebrate Warren's life with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Glioblastoma Foundation in hope that one day, there is a cure.
Faith and Death, by Mort Hulce (Warren's uncle)
The human soul is a lonely thing
That soars on lucid, fragile wings.
Where did it come from, where will it go?
Man may wonder, but never know.
When getting ready to depart
It dulls the brain
And still the heart
And hides in a misty border-land
Lest mortals dare follow
The soul of man.
