Former Hodag swimmer Kiah Francis named captain of Liberty University swim team
Francis will be one of three team captains for the NCAA Division I swim program, the team announced in a social media post last Thursday. She will share the captaincy with Abigail Egolf Jensen and Emily Zimcosky.
"That our team elected Kiah as one of our captains this year is certainly no surprise to our coaching staff," head Liberty University swim and dive coach Jake Shellenberger said in an email to the River News. "Kiah has a heart for servant leadership and understands the mentality that 'leaders eat last.' Kiah is a model student-athlete and one that we hope our freshmen emulate during their time here at Liberty."
Francis has primarily focused on breaststroke and the individual medley at Liberty. She was a WIAA Division 2 state champion in the 200-yard IM and 100 breaststroke for the Hodags in 2016.
Francis qualified for the A final in the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM, and the B final in the 200 IM at this past winter's Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships. She finished seventh in the conference in the 400 IM, eighth in the 200 IM and 13th in the 200 IM.
Francis has made the A finals at the CCSAs seven times during her collegiate career, with her best finish coming in 2018 when she took second n the 400 IM.
"We're thrilled for Kiah and our program, and we're looking forward to this coming year," Shellenberger said.
The Flames won the CCSA championship for the second consecutive year, and third time overall in program history in 2020.
Francis is majoring in strategic communication at Liberty.
