Hillary Isebrands, PE, PHD, a Rhinelander native and a 1992 graduate of Rhinelander High School, recently received the high honor of the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Engineer of the Year. FHWA employs nearly 3,000 professionals that support state and local governments in the design, construction, and maintenance of the nation's highway system and various federally and tribal owned lands, according to a press release announcing the honor.

With this honor, Isebrands was also selected as a National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) top 10 Federal Engineer of the Year finalist out of a field of 22 distinguished engineers from the federal government. (https://www.nspe.org/resources/interest-groups/government/federal-engineer-the- year). The awards were a result of Isebrands receiving the FHWA Administrator's Excellence in Engineering Award for her work in deploying proven safety countermeasure across the country including roundabouts and local road safety plans. She was additionally recognized in 2019 as a co-lead for a USDOT Secretary's Safety Team Award for an effort to deploy local road safety plans across the country to reduce fatal and injury crashes on all public roads.

Her career in civil engineering started as a Student Engineer Trainee at the Wisconsin DOT office in Rhinelander, as she was pursuing her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University. She enjoyed her summers working construction with WisDOT staff on Highways 70, 51 and 86. After graduation she worked as a transportation engineer and project manager for Ayres Associates in Eau Claire; a traffic and safety research engineer at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa; and as an independent consultant before she started as a Senior Roadway Safety Engineer and Team Leader with the FHWA Resource Center, Safety and Design Technical Service Team in 2010 in Colorado.

Isebrands has a BS (1997), MS (2004), and PhD (2011) in Civil Engineering, all from Iowa State University. She is also a licensed professional engineer in Wisconsin and Iowa. Isebrands and her husband, Ben Gerdes, along with their children, Ingrid and Gus, have called Eagle, Colo. their home since 2007. They enjoy returning to Rhinelander in the summers to enjoy all that the Northwoods has to offer, the release notes. Isebrands is the daughter of Karen Isebrands Brown (Jim Brown) and Jud Isebrands (Sharon O'Leary).
