Elementary students learn about birds of prey during visit to CAVOC
Wild Instincts wildlife rehabilitation center operator Mark Naniot explained that birds' feathers are camouflaged to help protect them against enemies. Their feathers also keep them warm and help them to fly. The students also learned that birds' feet help them to perch and to pull apart their food, according to a school district press release on the visit.
Naniot gave many examples of how birds use their body parts to survive by showing the students the body parts of a live red-tailed hawk, saw whet owl and a barred owl.
The birds are permanent residents of Wild Instincts because they suffered injuries that would cause them to be unable to survive in the wild.

Many students also donated paper towels, hand soap, garbage bags and scrubbing pads to the wildlife rehabilitation center.
