The Nicolet Players are gearing up for their spring play, "Picnic," with auditions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evenings, April 6 and 7, at 7 p.m. at the Nicolet Theatre.

"'Picnic' is a wonderful piece of writing by William Inge with a rich history," Jim Nuttall, the director of the Nicolet College Theatre, noted in a press release. "It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1953. It also was the play where Paul Newman, who was unknown at the time, first displayed his talent to the world. The play has comedy, drama, and romance - just a lot of stuff for our cast to dig their teeth into."

According to the release, "Picnic" starts off with several women in a sleepy little town preparing for the annual Labor Day picnic. But a drifter looking for work is about to enter their lives in some widely disruptive ways. After he hops off a freight train and accepts a gig trading odd jobs for a room at one of the women's homes, his edgy proclivities start to upset apple carts all over the place. Hearts break, lives change forever, and the town's innocence goes the way of the train tracks out of town.

"As always, the auditions are open to everyone. No acting experience or enrollment at Nicolet College is required," the release states. "Those interested don't necessarily need to prepare for the audition, but as with any play, it can be a good idea to read the script beforehand. Scripts are available for a three-day checkout from the service desk on the third floor Richard J. Brown Library, located in the Lakeside Center."

Interested parties need to audition only one night but in the past, many have elected to attend both nights.

There are roles for seven women and four men. Five of the roles (Madge, Hal, Alan, Millie, Bomber) are for younger people, from teens to early 20s. The remaining six roles are for older adults. Casting decisions will be partly based on the ages of the actors who show up at auditions. Full descriptions of the roles and other information about "Picnic" can be found at the "Upcoming Auditions" link at www.nicoletlive.com.

Rehearsals will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., four nights a week. The play breaks down into discrete groups of characters, so most actors will get nights off as different scenes are rehearsed. All cast members need to be present for the last two weeks of rehearsals.

Public performances are scheduled for June 5-7 and 11-14, with Sunday performances at 2 p.m. and all others at 7:30 p.m.
