The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team put a bow on its 2019-20 season Sunday with an awards banquet at the Haven Restaurant in Rhinelander.

The Hodags finished second in the GNC Small Division this season, behind only state-qualifier Medford, and were fourth at WIAA Division 2 sectionals in Antigo.

"We had to overcome a lot of small adversities this season," coach Heather Sturtevant said, noting the team had multiple illnesses and injuries this season - including injuries sustained by leading juniors Autumn Shafer and Lilli Bishop while. "Girls had to keep stepping up when they might not have even been planning on competing and then, all of a sudden, they had to do varsity. With that, we just continued to improve all around. We improved our (individual) scores. We improved our team scores. We had so many personal bests. Really, just everybody stepped up no matter where they were needed. That was just such a nice feeling as a coach, to have a team that was that cohesive that they would do that."

All awards handed out during the banquet were for tangible achievements attained by athletes during the season. Bishop was the lone member of the 30-point all-around club this year while four gymnasts were part of the 8.0 club by scoring at least one 8 in one event this season - Bishop (floor, vault), Shafer (floor, vault), Bridget Koser (floor) and Peyton Rudawski (vault).

Shafer and senior Amber Briggs were honored as the team's captains, while Koser and Bishop received medals from the Wisconsin High School Gymnastics Association for attaining academic All-State honors with GPAs of 3.5 or above. Abby Belbot was named the team's "Beam Queen" as the gymnast with the fewest number of falls on balance beam this season.

Additionally the team handed out personal-best medals to those who attained at least one personal-best during the correct of the season. Those awards went to Bishop, Koser, Shafer, Belbot, Briggs, Allysa Scheuermann and Alli Golomb.

The team also recognized its two seniors - Briggs and Scheuermann.

With most of this year's squad slated to return, Sturtevant said she and the team are looking forward to next season.

"Looking forward to next year already, girls have some goals," Sturtevant said. "We were down at state (last weekend) and we came back with new ideas and new thoughts for some of the girls and some things to try this summer. The girls are all super game and really wanting to continue to up their games. That's exactly how we're going to move forward with our program."
