The Lake Tomahawk Family Fisheree took place on Lake Tomahawk on Saturday, Feb. 22. The weather cooperated for this year's fisheree, and 132 kids took advantage of the mild weather and got out on the ice to have some fun and test their fishing skills. For many of the contestants, this is an annual event to which they always look forward. For others, this was their first fishing competition. All of the kids who participated received a door prize and food was also available to all competitors.

The catch rate, according to organizer Gary Drossart, was very good this year, providing great opportunity for some good memories to be made on the ice. Kids competed in several categories, and size lucky anglers even went home with a new bicycle in a separate drawing.

In the Northern Pike category, Dylon Kolzow was victorious with his 26-inch beauty. Kayden Schulz pulled the biggest bass through the ice at 14 inches. The bluegill category was won by a 8.25-inch fish brought in by Baylee Gumieny. Ryan Morien won two categories with a 12.75-inch crappie and a 9.5-inch perch. The smallest fish of the competition was a six-inch bluegill reeled in by Kyle Morien.

The yearly event is always a big draw, Drossart said. While it takes a lot of work and effort from volunteers, as well as donations from the community, it is well worth it to see kids outside having fun. This event could not be accomplished without the cooperation and support of the people and businesses of Lake Tomahawk, Minocqua and surrounding areas. The groups' sites are now set on next year, and hoping for another event with great weather and even greater fishing opportunities for the kids.
