Local author Bill Rutherford highlights legendary local trapper
"I am honored that he (Dumask) has selected me to be the one to narrate his story," Rutherford said. With his first book being so well received, his hope, and Dumask's as well, is to have this book follow suit.
Rutherford is a member of the American Legion Winegar Post 480. He has donated a portion of proceeds from his books to the Post, with some of those proceeds going to help pay for the memorial built there.
"Both Mr. Chet Dumask and I are confident that by sharing the story of his life, people will be entertained and inspired by his accomplishments," Rutherford said.
Rutherford's desire to attract visitors to the Presque Isle area extends beyond his books. The author was born a "Yooper," he said, but still calls Winegar (now known as Presque Isle) home. He enjoys showcasing the hardworking and interesting people who shaped him, in his youth, to become the man he is today.
In the last 18 months, he has also hidden 35 geocaches in and around the area. Each geocache, he said, tells a story of a person, place or event in the town's rich history. At last estimate, the geocaches place by over 100 out-of-town visitors.
Those interested in pre-ordering the book "Fearless," following the hunting and trapping career of Dumask, can do so on Rutherford's website www.thebillrutherford.com. The book is set to be released Friday, May 22, with a book release party at the Winegar Post 480 in Presque Isle. Two author talks and book signings are also planned thus far. The first will be at the Presque Isle Community Library at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 26. The next will be at the Winchester Public Library at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 30. Rutherford said he hopes to line up more speaking engagements, all of which will be listed on his website as they are finalized.
