The course held its annual junior camp last week with a handful of youngsters heading out to the practice green, putting green and eventually the golf course during the five-day event.
Kyle Christian, head PGA professional at the Rhinelander golf course, said the camp attracted nine kids from the Rhinelander and Tomahawk areas, which he considered to be a good turnout given the circumstances as restrictions slowly begin to relax in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Our numbers are a little down. We'd like to get about 12-15 kids in the program," he said. "We had nine but I talked to a lot of the parents and they're happy their kids are at least able to do one camp this year. Turnout was just a little slow, but pretty good to get nine of them when we normally only do a few more."
The camp focused on putting, short game and full swings with irons and woods.
While all sports have been impacted due to the pandemic, golf has fared better than most. Golf courses got the OK to open, following a number of limitations, in late April under the extension of the state's Safer at Home order, which was eventually overturned by the state Supreme Court.
Though the order was overturned, a number of high school and youth sports activities have been canceled or postponed, which was part of the reason Christian said he wanted to make sure the youth camp continued.
"With a lot of the camps canceled, we thought we'd at least want to get a week with the juniors to promote the game," he said. "Green Golf Partners, our management team, they're big on keeping junior golf going. I put some pictures of them on Facebook, just encourage them to come out and get them excited. They all like it and they're all in five, six different sports right now. We're trying to persuade them to play golf in high school, but it's obviously good for them to keep playing other sports."
The course typically holds a supplemental junior program that meets weekly during the summer. That program was canceled for the year, but Christian said he has a few private lessons scheduled with kids who would have normally taken part in that program.
