Hodags Van Zile, Winnicki named to Northern Indigenous All-State team
Van Zile, a member of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community, Mole Lake Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, led the Hodags, scoring 21.3 points per game this past season while adding 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.1 steals per contest. During the season Van Zile not only became the all-time leading scorer in RHS girls' basketball history, surpassing Becky Knutson, her 1,670 career points left her atop the all-time scoring list at Rhinelander - passing Mike Flory's previous school mark by 104 points.
Van Zile, who will play collegiately at UW-Oshkosh, earned Great Northern Conference co-player of the year honors with teammate Cynthia Beavers, and was also named all-state by both the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and the Associated Press. She and Beavers are both scheduled to represent the Hodags at the WBCA All-Star Game in Wisconsin Dells Aug. 5.
Winnicki, a member of the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, reached the podium in a pair of events at the WIAA Division 2 girls' swim and dive meet in Madison, taking fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and fifth as part of the Hodags' 200 medley relay team with Lisa Kennedy, Malia Francis and Noelle St. Pierre. Additionally, Winnicki was a sectional champion in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and was the Great Northern Conference champion in the 200 medley relay and 100 butterfly.
