Dr. Schiek attended elementary school in Rhinelander and then attended the Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, where he finished second in his graduating class of 1959. He then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics in 1963. As a senior at Marquette he was asked to teach higher mathematics to high school teachers working on their own Masters degrees.
After his graduation from Marquette, Dr. Schiek decided to continue his education at Marquette University in their Medical School. He received his MD from Marquette in 1967 and then spent one year in a rotating internship and four years in surgical residency at the Milwaukee County Hospital. During this time he also served for six years with the Wisconsin National Guard's 13th Evacuation Hospital.
On July 1, 1972, Dr. Schiek realized his dream of joining his father, Dr. Irving Schiek Jr., at the Schiek clinic in Rhinelander, which was established by his grandfather in 1927. He served the Rhinelander community and surrounding area as a surgeon for nearly four decades. His career was cut short by being diagnosed with MS. He will always be remembered by those he cared for as having a wonderful bedside manner. Beside his skills as a surgeon he was blessed with a confident and calming demeanor and wonderful sense of humor that put his patients and their families at ease.
Dr. Schiek married the former Ruth Ann Mangerson on Dec. 26, 1964 and together they raised their family of four children here in Rhinelander. He had many interests outside his work which included hunting, fishing, water and snow skiing, trap shooting and golf. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Rhinelander Country Club with his many close friends who will miss him dearly.
Dr. Schiek was also a lifelong member of the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and had served on the Board of Directors for Headwaters, Inc. He was also proud of being instrumental in getting the nursing program started at Nicolet College. He gave to others and was forever grateful, as was his family, for those that helped him. They include Dr. Swank, Dr. Wait, The Ascension Wound Clinic and Ascension Home Care and Hospice, The Hometown Pharmacy and Ron Bosi.
Dr. Schiek is survived by his wife Ruth Ann, his daughters Lisa (Eric) Krueger and Lori Schiek, his sons Steven (Kris) Schiek and David (Alison) Schiek, his grandchildren Colton, Spencer, Nicholas, Joseph, Ella, Audrey, Olivia, Michael and Hayley, his sisters Mary Cameron and Ellen (John) Farley his brothers John (Kathy) Schiek, Bill (Eva) Schiek and Jim Schiek, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
