Hodag Farmers Market report: Big, beautiful blueberries
By Cassie Shefchik-
Two weeks ago it was new potatoes and beans. Last week blueberries arrived at the market. Big, beautiful blueberries!
When I was young, us kids would go out picking wild blueberries with our parents and/or grandparents. Hours were spent in the hot sun picking those tasty dark blue gems. There was one steadfast rule: don't touch any adult's bucket. Us kids could eat all that we picked if we wanted. Sometimes we did. As the years went by, more often we only ate a few, saving the rest for eating later.
Mom and dad would put the berries in freezer containers but leave a good amount out for fresh eating. Mom used the frozen berries throughout the year in fruit salads, pancakes, and muffins. However, as the years went by and we grew bigger and had larger appetites, for a quick snack we often stole into the freezer to grab a fast handful of BBs: our nickname for frozen blueberries. As life would have it, our folly was always discovered by mom when she would find a pint container with only a trace of blueberries left on the bottom. I'd like to place the blame on my brother and sister for their rambunctious, rebel attitudes but I'm fairly certain they would both place blame on me and the other one.
Nowadays there are so many pick your own blueberry places as well as backyard gardeners growing domestic varieties. Truth be told, the newer berries are big and beautiful as well as very tasty.
I really don't miss picking them wild.
Blueberries are so easy to pop into the freezer. Just make sure they are perfectly dry and they won't stick together.
You'll find blueberries - and many assorted vegetables - at the Hodag Farmers' Market this Saturday at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
