Eric H. Voss

Eric H. Voss

Another name was added to the list of deceased Iraq War veterans when Eric H. Voss was found in his Stevens Point apartment. He was a victim of numerous health problems related to Post Traumatic Stress Disease which was caused by his three years of duty in Iraq. As a Staff Sergeant he was, among other duties, given the task of being the lead vehicle in the night-time convoys which traveled approximately 12 hours a day for a 15-month deployment, and securing the guard tower on another 12-month deployment. Despite being shot at in the towers or having been present when IEDs were exploding on the roads during the convoys, he was not injured physically. Unfortunately, his nerves were shattered and he became a person displaying all the classic symptoms of PTSD. God spared him further suffering by taking him home in June, 2020.

Eric was born June 13, 1979, in Rhinelander, and was a 1997 graduate of Rhinelander High School. He played football and hockey at RHS. He was an avid sports fan all of his life and was proud to see his son become a member of the Hodag football team. Shortly after graduation, he entered the Army and was trained in Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He won over 13 medals for tactical missile launching and was the only soldier at an E-4 rank that would be called to help secure targets if a major war broke out. After his first four years were completed, he returned to Rhinelander and attended Nicolet College for two years while serving in the Plymouth National Guard Unit. During this time he married Lucy and his son Eugene was born. He rejoined the active, full-time Army and served for another eight years, and was deployed to Iraq for three tours. Upon completion of this enlistment, he joined the National Guard in Tomah and then in Stevens Point, where he finished his 20 years of service. He worked various jobs after completing his Army career, but the stresses of PTSD made full-time employment difficult. He loved fishing at his grandmother's lake, or anywhere else in the world he could find water with fish in it. He also began serious study of the Bible and enjoyed hearing God's word. His last gift to his father was a computerized device which recited Bible passages and verses. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. Due to COVID-19, funeral arrangements are pending.

Eric is survived by his son Eugene Voss, wife Lucy Voss, his parents Vickie and Richard Voss, his grandmother Delores Voss, sister Greta (Voss) Knowles and husband John, and sister Heidi Voss, as well as his nieces Olivia and Eliza Knowles, and his nephew Alexander Knowles, and his aunt and uncle Jean Voss and Steve Doll. He was predeceased by his uncle Fred Voss.

Any memorial gifts will be used for his son Eugene's higher education.
