Twenty-three Rhinelander students competed against approximately 500 other students from northcentral Wisconsin at DECA Districts Jan. 10 in Wisconsin Rapids.

According to a School District of Rhinelander press release, DECA competitions fall into one of four clusters: marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Within the clusters there are more specific events that deal with a more specific career field. For example, if a student were to choose accounting as their event, that would fall under the finance cluster. Competitors studied throughout the month of December in an effort to get the highest score they could on an economics test, a career cluster test and two role plays.

According to the release, the economics test was completed before students went to Wisconsin Rapids.

Students had the opportunity to medal in the economics test, in addition to their event. Once at Rapids, students took a career cluster test that related to the general event they were competing in (marketing, finance, hospitality, or management). For the other half of their score, students were given two "real-life" situation/role plays which they had to try to work out in front of a judge (who is often a complaining customer, a business partner, or an employee).

Of the 23 Rhinelander students that competed at districts, five individuals and three teams of two earned a medal or plaque.

The team of Valerie Dalka and Carmen Ibarra took first place in their event which was Hospitality Team Decision Making. Dalka and Ibarra earned three medals, and both also took home a medal for their performance on the economics test.

The following teams also earned first place in their events: Abbey Henrichs and Gwyneth Lowry (Buying & Merchandising Team Decision Making). Henrichs and Lowry took home three medals. Henrichs also received a medal for the economics test.

One individual earned second in an event: Makenzie Denny (Quick Service Restaurant) not only finished with 2nd, but also earned two medals while doing so.

The following Rhinelander students received individual medals: Lilli Bishop (Personal Financial Literacy) and Alexis Engelking (Sports & Entertainment Marketing) each received a medal for their cluster test; Izzy Haverkampf (Accounting) received a medal for her second role play and the team of Ashleigh Hull and Kaylee Roberts (Travel & Tourism Team Decision Making) received a medal for their first role play.

Rhinelander High School has been involved in DECA for six years.

The Hodags compete in District II, which includes high schools from Lakeland to Adams-Friendship.

Seventeen Rhinelander students will be going on to the state competition in Lake Geneva March 9-12.

Anyone interested in assisting in sending these students to the state competition is invited to contact adviser Mischell Fryar at 715-365-9500.
