Middle school Nordic competes at conference, Badger State
The Hodags finished third of five teams in the middle school girls' division of Tuesday's conference race, and fourth of five teams in the boys' division.
Nora Rutkowski led the Hodag girls taking fifth overall with a time of 11 minutes, 47.8 seconds over the 3-kilometer classic race. Brynn Teter was seventh (13:14.8), Violet Biolo was 13th (13:45.1), Luna Grage was 17th (14:27.0) and Mya Gillen was 23rd (15:17.5).
Seventh grader Macy Lester was credited as not finishing the race because, according to Rhinelander Nordic coach Charil Reis, she was misdirected on the course. She was given an opportunity to compete in the junior varsity high school girls' race and finished third overall, covering 6 1/2 kilometers in 27:29.2.
On the boys' side, Ryan Morien led the way finishing fourth overall (10:33.3), followed by Mason Shinners in fifth (10:45.5). Olin Slette finished 29th (13:12.1), Carter Nelson was 48th (17:02.0) and Calvin Loomis was 51st (17:36.6) to round out Rhinelander's top five.
Last Saturday the Hodags had five athletes collect seven medals from the Badger State Games held at Nine Mile Forest. Rhinelander had the overall champions in both the boys' and girls' 4-kilometer freestyle races with Morien (12:32.8) and Lester (13:38.4). Morien also won a silver medal in the 4K classic race (13:52.6). Olin Slette won two medals in the 9-11 age group, taking first in his age group in the classic race (17:26.1) and second in the freestyle (14:44.8). Rutkowski added a silver medal in the girls' 4K classic race (15:03.1) and Shinners took the bronze in the boys' 4K classic (14:03.3).
