Students at James Williams Middle School (JWMS) are learning to show kindness through service learning projects. A service learning project is something that teaches students new skills, creates positive connections in the community, and benefits the community through student volunteerism, according to a school district press release.

Eighth graders Peyton Clark and Chloe Durkee have embraced the concept of kindness through service. Peyton has volunteered at the animal shelter three or four times each week, starting back in September. She cleans cages, socializes animals, and helps people find the right animal for their home.

"I wanted to volunteer at a kennel to help with animals and found out the shelter had a program to join," she explained. "I get the satisfaction of helping with the community and helping the animals in need."

Over the holidays, Chloe hosted a dinner to benefit NATH/Frederick Place homeless shelter. She used the funds generated from the dinner to buy hats, gloves, and other supplies listed on the NATH/Frederick Place website. "Mrs. Cirilli at school encouraged us to do a kindness project. My family had hosted dinners before, and I wanted to continue that tradition," she explained.
