Firefighters were able to contain a fire in the sawmill of the McNaughton Correctional Center on Monday.

Doug Rehm, Lake Tomahawk's fire chief and also an employee of the town's road department, happened to be about a mile away with a front end loader, pushing snowbanks back from intersections when the call came in.

"Basically, what happened is snow started to come off the roof of the sawmill and took off the chimney to a woodburning stove inside the building in the attic, and that's basically where it was contained," he said.

Rehm said the road used wasn't plowed very wide and he "beat feet" to the road with the front end loader.

"I got it opened up so we could get in there," he said.

Beside the Lake Tomahawk Fire Department, firefighters from Hazelhurst, Woodruff and Newbold also responded to the call.
