Elaine Hinke, a resident of Bell Tower Residence Assisted Living in Merrill, celebrated her 101st birthday on Jan. 24, 2020. According to a Bell Tower press release, Hinke was born in Ironwood, Mich., just 15 miles from Lake Superior, in 1919. She had one brother and three sisters. Her father was a plumber and her mother was a loving homemaker and wife. Sadly, she lost her father in a car accident when he was in his early 40s. Elaine met the love of her life at a dance in the Memorial Building when she was just 16. Elmer had a blue suit on and she didn't know he was from the CCC Camp in Manitowish Waters. He asked her to dance and she told him she didn't dance. He said he would meet her at the bus station next week and he was there. From then on he came to see her every Sunday afternoon. The couple married when Elaine turned 19 and honeymooned at the Wausau Hotel for two weeks. They were married for 67 years and had five children. Hinke is pictured with her son Dave and her daughter Carol.
