Food pantry invites groups to register for CANtastic fundraiser

This community event provides a unique and fun way for groups and individuals to serve others while helping feed local residents.
"CANtastic is a program where different groups are invited to build things out of food cans and boxes of food based on the theme," RAFP executive director Guy Hansen explained. "The theme this year is 'On the Road to Ending Hunger,' so it's things you might see on a road trip."
Hansen said all the donated food used to build the structures will go directly to the RAFP.
"We expect to get between 3,000-5,000 pounds of food," Hansen said. "At the value of roughly a dollar per can, that's a $3,000-$5,000 donation from the groups that do this."
While this fundraiser has the potential to raise a large sum of money for the food pantry, CANtastic cannot be held without enough groups registered.
Hansen said three groups have already signed up, but they won't hold the event unless they have a total of five groups pre-registered.
Which means the RAFP is looking for more groups interested in participating in CANtastic.
All community groups and organization, as well as individuals interested in participating, are invited to sign up.
Groups can be as large as desired, but Hansen suggests having only five in a group building at any one time to avoid overcrowding the structures. Groups have the option to raise the money for the food themselves, or they can get sponsors or collect food from food drives.
Once groups have enough cans of food, they are invited to build a structure related to this year's theme.
The structures will be judged by three judges and winners will receive prizes.
Winning categories include judge's choice, people's choice and most cans used (following theme).
The structures will be on display at the Rouman Cinema for voting.
Teams should register as soon as possible but the deadline is Friday, Feb. 7.
