Nicolet Cosmetology Club to host showcase March 2

Marie Stott, cosmetology instructor at Nicolet, said this event is a major fundraiser for students to travel to Chicago in order to attend the America's Beauty Show hosted at the McCormick Center. The funds raised from the ticket sales for the showcase Monday will help those cosmetology students earn funds to pay their way to the Chicago show.
In Chicago, the cosmetology students will learn all about the latest and greatest celebrity styles and techniques of the fashion world, and can take special classes to hone in on specific skills, Stott said.
But in order to get there, students will host their own showcase to strut their stuff and show off the skills they've practiced throughout the semester.
"This year's theme for the hair show is 'carnival,' so it will be a circus-type theme," Stott explained. "Each of the students will have three models, and on each of the three models, they will do their hair, makeup and costumes."
Stott said the students will use extravagant makeup and clothing to create a fantasy feel. She said a bearded lady, strong man and a two-headed lady are just some of the ideas students had for the show.
"It should be a lot of fun, they're a pretty creative group," Stott said. "I'm excited to see what they all do."
Three professional judges will present first, second and third place winners in different categories of style, including formal, freestyle and avant-garde.
Those judges include local beauticians Callie Pisut, Kim Colburn and Kerrie Groat.
In addition to the catwalk showcase, Stott said various businesses in the community generously donated various gift cards and certificates so the students can also hold a silent auction to aid in their fundraising efforts.
"All of that helps to fundraise for our club, which facilitates our trip to Chicago," Nicolet cosmetology student Brooke Berray said. "The more people we can get to attend, the more it helps. Plus the funding we have left over we leave behind for next year's students, so it's not only for us but for the future of the program as well."
She said this is an exciting opportunity for her and her peers to travel to Chicago to get a glimpse into the world of cutting-edge fashion there.
"There's tons of people from all over who go to that beauty show in Chicago," Berray said, "so it's really a huge deal for us to get to go to it."
But before they leave for Chicago, Berray said she is excited to present their hard work at the annual showcase. She said she is most excited about the avant-garde category of style because she has a contortionist character picked out which will be modeled by a gymnast who will also perform a floor routine on stage.
"I'll be taking her look very geometric and harsh, and I feel like that will contrast with her character since being a contortionist is all about flexibility," Berray explained. "Her whole look is going to be very rigid, so I think it will be a cool juxtaposition between the two."
In addition to the high fashion designs the students have in store for spectators, Berray said they will put their own twist on the carnival theme by providing a few classic carnival games in order to make the showcase more interactive for guests.
Berray said they have been working hard to create a unique showcase.
"We would love to see some more people from the Rhinelander area reaching out and coming out to see what we're doing," Berray said.
All are welcome to join the Nicolet Cosmetology Club for the showcase.
Tickets can be purchased individually for $15 or four tickets for $50, and are available at the door of Nicolet's Lakeside Center.
