James "Jim" A. Vanney, 81, of Tomahawk, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 at Riverview Health Services.

Jim was born on Thursday, Sept. 8, 1938, in Rhinelander, to Joseph N. and Minerva J. (Trotier) Vanney.

He grew up in Rhinelander, attending grade school at St. Mary's Catholic Grade School and was a 1957 graduate of Rhinelander High School. He met his future wife Diane Duellman through friends. The couple were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rhinelander on Aug. 29, 1959.

He was employed at Montgomery Ward for 15 years and was the department manager with the tire department. He was then employed with John Taylor Sewer and Water Contractor. He later became a salesman with New York Life from 1977 until his retirement in 2000.

As an additional hobby, Jim enjoyed bartending at the Bearskin Inn and the Little Rice Bar. He just loved to meet people and was always ready to share a joke.

He enjoyed camping at Clear Lake in Woodruff, playing cribbage, horseshoes, fishing, trips to the casino and an ice-cold beer. He will be remembered for being kind-hearted, celebrating Christmas with the family and his joke telling.

He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church and is a past member of the Knights of Columbus, mixed couples bowling league, the National Guard and the Oneida County Board where he served for eight years.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Diane; children, Patty Seifert of Sheboygan, Deb (Kevin) Hansen of Tomahawk, Pam (Jim) Haack of Lake Tomahawk, Richard (Lisa) Vanney of Rhinelander; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, John (Carol) Vanney of Thiensville.

Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends as well as his four-legged companion, Cody, who loved to sit in Jim's lap and watch T.V. together.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Randy Seifert and by four brothers and four sisters.

The visitation for Jim will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at 125 E. King Street from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial.

Inurnment will take place at a later date at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery.
