My funny valentine: Rhinelander Masonic Lodge Club 242 to host comedy night Feb. 15

Club 242 is Rhinelander's newest event venue located in the Masonic Lodge, and will be featuring a special comedy night on Saturday, Feb. 15, in which regional entertainers Marj Rowan and Chad Filley will return to Rhinelander to wow the Valentine's Day crowd with their slapstick skit.
Tickets for the show, set to start at 7 p.m., are $15 and will be available at the door.
Wristbands will also be available for patrons 21+, as the Rhinelander Brewing Company will provide beer on tap in addition to table snacks.
Master of the Lodge Tony Jones said the comedy night is intended to be a fundraiser for the new renovations at the historic Masonic Lodge in downtown Rhinelander and will serve as a test run for similar events in the future.
"We've never done anything like this before," Jones said. "We want to see where it will go and hopefully we can get a good turnout."
If the comedy night goes well this weekend, Jones said the Masons will host more such events in the future.
While the Masons have remained a quiet group in Rhinelander for several decades, Jones said they have decided to change that and become more involved in community participation in an effort to encourage new members to join their civic group.
To meet that goal, Jones said the Masonic Lodge has been completely revamped for use as a community event venue.
"We'd like people to see it as a place they can rent for weddings, funerals or any sort of family gathering," Jones said.
In addition, Jones said the Masons provide scholarship endowments to Rhinelander High School seniors, but because those endowments are ending, the Masons are now trying to raise money in an effort to continue that scholarship fund.
In hosting events like the comedy night this weekend, Jones said the Masons hope to continue supporting the community and in doing so, expand their membership.
This is all in an effort to carry on the longstanding tradition of the Rhinelander Masonic Lodge, Jones said, noting that the local chapter celebrated its 130th anniversary last year, making it the oldest still functioning civic organization in the city.
"It's a group of community-minded men working for the betterment of the community," Jones explained. "It's the kind of brotherhood you don't get just anywhere, and I think that's what makes us attractive to potential members."
Jones said the fraternity is a worldwide organization with hundreds of local chapters which promote the basic tenets of friendship, morality and brotherly love.
The Masons are trying to develop a community relationship, Jones said, and supporting regional performers as a means to promote their venue and organization which supports other local organizations and individuals is an important step in that process.
