One of the sweetest days of the year is right around in the corner as the 13th annual "Taste of Chocolate" event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 in downtown Rhinelander.

Over 35 participating downtown businesses will be offering samples of chocolate specialty items throughout the evening. Patrons can also enjoy live music and special offerings while browsing samples, organizers said.

The evening will conclude with the Nicolet Bank Golden Ticket Drawing at 8:15 p.m. at the Rhinelander Cafe & Pub on N. Brown Street.

The Golden Ticket is valued at $1,000 in Downtown Bucks.

The purchase of a ticket to Taste of Chocolate entitles the purchaser to entry in the Golden Ticket Drawing.

You do not need to be present at the time of the drawing to win the Golden Ticket, organizers noted.

Tickets for "Taste of Chocolate" are $5 each and can be purchased in advance or on the night of the event.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at Nicolet Bank, Trig's service desk, CT's Deli or Bucketheads.

Tickets will also be available the night of the event until 7 p.m. and can be purchased at participating businesses.

Participating businesses will be marked with red Taste of Chocolate hearts. Those businesses include 13 Gifts, ArtStart, Bath and Body Creations, Bling on Brown, Big Daddy's, Bucketheads, CT's Deli, Diane's Frame Shoppe, Essence of Synergy, Festive Frog, Flander Realty Group, Fun Factory Sweet Shoppe, Headwaters Christan Youth/Calvary Baptist, Hometown Pharmacy, Imaginuity, Kindred Cottage, Kids Corner Pizza, Knight Gallery, Magician Beautician, Mel's Trading Post, Nail Diva, Northland Music, Northwestern Tavern, Revitalize, Rhinelander Brewing Company, Rhinelander Cafe & Pub, Serenity, The Lash Project, Unique Creations, Tricia's Treasures and Zion Lutheran Church.

Rhonda Jicinsky, president of Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. and event coordinator, said Taste of Chocolate is a fundraiser to support Downtown Rhinelander, Inc..

"Downtown Rhinelander has about six events every year and they're all intended to raise money for the downtown," Jicinsky said. "Taste of Chocolate is our most profitable event."

Money raised during Taste of Chocolate will be used to maintain events and drive traffic downtown, Jicinsky said.

The proceeds will also go toward decorating downtown with flower baskets in the warmer months and Christmas lights during the holiday season.

Because Nicolet Bank sponsored the Golden Ticket, all ticket sales are profit and will go to Downtown Rhinelander, Inc., Jicinsky said.

Jicinsky said the Golden Ticket is a great incentive for patrons to show their support.

The Golden Ticket winner will receive $1,000 in Downtown Bucks, which will be redeemable as gift certificates which can be used at different downtown businesses at any time of the year.

"It's kind of like 'Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory' winning the Golden Ticket," Jicinsky said. "It adds an extra bit of excitement."

In addition, participating businesses will feature specialty chocolate items.

CT's Deli, for example, will be featuring their chocolate-covered bacon as well as chocolate liqueur for sampling.

Whatever flavor you prefer, there will be something for everyone at this year's Taste of Chocolate.

"If you haven't been downtown in awhile, it's a chance to check out the new stores and everything else that's going on downtown," Jicinsky said. "It's just a fun night out to combat cabin fever this time of year."
