Rhinelander Lions support Jan. 1 fireworks display
"This year the Lights is very excited to add a new feature to the event, a fireworks display," Rhinelander past Lions president Mike Romportl announced in a press release. The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday night, Jan. 1, 2021, at Hodag Park. Due to the current COVID 19 recommendations to limit gatherings, there will be no indoor activities at the Lights, the release states.
The Rhinelander Lions have been involved in the Lights of the Northwoods since its inception, according to the release. This year, the Lions showed support by donating $500 toward the fireworks display.
The Rhinelander Lions sponsored the formation of Lights of the Northwoods four years ago and continue to support the Lights now that it is a standalone 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, Romportl noted.
The first Lights event far exceeded the group's expectations for support and interest. Building on community support, the Lights event has grown each year.
"The Lights of the Northwoods greatly appreciates the Lions support and also all of the businesses, organizations and people that have donated already for the 2020 Lights event. The Lights also appreciates the support they received from the City of Rhinelander for continued use of the park and Fire Chief Williams to review and approve the Fireworks permit," said Romportl.
The Lights relies on volunteers to help all year around to prepare and put up the display in Hodag Park each year. Several Lions also help the Lights, but more volunteers are needed.
