Kneer: Majority of final detail work on Hodag Dome to be completed in January

The final details to be completed before the Hodag Dome project officially wraps up should be finished by the end of January, the Rhinelander school board learned Dec. 21.

John Kneer, president of Rettler Corporation, which is overseeing the work of the subcontractors on the $8 million Hodag Sports Complex project, laid out the timetable for completion of the remaining tasks.

"I'm happy to say we're in the home stretch. Eric (Burke, SDR superintendent) and I discussed earlier today, we've nailed down the remaining schedule of the work for our contract here," Kneer said. "I have some dates here for when the remaining work will be done."

Kneer said the dome was "substantially complete" before the Nov. 3 election, and once that event was completed, a punch list was compiled of various items the subcontractors need to complete before the dome would be formally handed over to the district.

"Most of those punch list items were worked on prior to Thanksgiving," Kneer said.

Dome manufacturer Arizon will be the first inside the dome.

"Some additional netting has been added between the tennis courts, we're working to get that manufactured," Kneer said. "Arizon is scheduled back on site Jan. 4, they will be working that week. They have one to two weeks, but I hear it is a 10-day work period to get that work finished."

During this period all of the remaining netting will be installed and final adjustments to the cable system to eliminate wrinkles will be made.

"Most importantly, I think, is nailing down a date for coordination of training in systems and review with the district. Janet (Jamison, dome manager) and other staff that will actually be controlling the dome," Kneer said.

"After the punch list is complete, that 10-day period, we hope to have a date when Arizon and Trane will come back and go over the HVAC controls."

This process will also ensure that all of the sensors for the dome are completely set, he added.

This is part of the dome "commissioning process" that must be done before the district takes full possession of the facility, he added.

Two items still to be added to the connector building are the final windows and doors to replace the temporary ones in place now.

This task is the responsibility of J. D. Ellenbecker, who built the addition to the concession stand.

"They're scheduled back on-site the week of 1-18, and they anticipate a week's efforts to get the doors and windows installed and then they're done," Kneer said.

Stratford Sign, which manufactured the donor wall inside the connector building, will be back the week of Jan. 4 for one day of work to make some minor corrections to that display.

"They'll be in and out without much interruption," Kneer said.

Upper Midwest Athletics, which did the surfacing of the tennis courts, track and pole vault, long and triple jump runs, will be in to install poles that go with the net rigging, he added.

Work the company is doing outside the dome and in other parts of the complex will get underway in spring, he noted.

Munson Brothers is done with its portion of the project. with the exception of spraying grass seed on the practice and softball fields and taking care of erosion control and other landscaping in the spring.

Kneer said the spring work would be coordinated with athletic director Brian Paulson.

He told the board he would be back to meet with the capitol projects ad hoc committee on Jan. 11 to see how the process is preceding.

Earlier in the meeting, the school board amended a motion to accept gifts and donations to include $410,107 from the Hodag Schools Foundation representing recent private donations to the sports complex.
