He was born on Jan. 28, 1936, in Rhinelander, to Ervin and Hilda (Maleug) Wendt.
Hillis was a hard worker his entire life working as a mechanic and then at Menards in his retirement.
He enjoyed over 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife Shirley, and they enjoyed traveling together, spending time with all of their family and simply watching the birds and wildlife out their windows at home.
Hillis was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by many.
Hillis is survived by his daughters Chrystal Wendt of Janesville, Brenda (Greg) Golden of Rhinelander, his sons Edward Wendt of Rhinelander, Michael Wendt and Lawrence (Tracy) Wendt, both of Rhinelander; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, daughter Becky Butterfield, son Kevin Wendt, and brother Walter Wendt.
Due to the current pandemic there will be no formal services for Hillis at this time.
