A local woman recently reached a pair of milestones not many achieve in a lifetime: former elementary school teacher Amy Adams turned 100-years-old on Sept. 6, 2020, and with that, she was recently honored as a Centennial Member by the Wisconsin Retired Educators' Association and its local counterpart, the Rhinelander Area Retired Educators' Association.

Adams received the award in November, just weeks before she passed away on Dec. 6.

The eldest of six siblings, Adams was born in Washburn, Wis., where her family lived and worked on a family farm.

After attending school near Washburn, she pursued higher education at Superior State Teachers' College (now the University of Wisconsin-Superior).

Her first teaching position led her to Wrenshall, Minn., where she pursued her bachelor's degree while simultaneously teaching fifth and sixth grade during the years of World War II.

Later on, Adams relocated to Rhinelander, where she taught sixth and later fifth grade at Central Elementary School for many years. Following more than 40 years of teaching at the elementary school level, Adams retired in 1985.

She said reading to her students each day and sharing her love of reading with them were some of her fondest teaching memories.

Mike Wiernasz, membership chair of the Rhinelander Area Retired Educators' Association, said the state organization presents a centennial award to members who reach the age of 100.

As such, Adams was recently honored as a Centennial Member of the Wisconsin Retired Educators' Association.

But at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations were kept at a minimum in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Instead, a certificate and pin were delivered and presented to Adams in November.

Wiernasz noted Adams is the first retired teacher to have met this milestone since he became a member of the state organization over 10 years ago.

Certainly, Adams's decades of teaching is a testament to her unwavering commitment to education and her legacy will live on in the minds of her former pupils.

A full obituary for Mrs. Adams is published on Page 3.
