Carl Weidling
Born in Chicago on March 12, 1920, he was the only child of Julius and Johanna (Scharlach) Weidling. During the Great Depression when he was 14 years old, he had to quit high school to help support his family after his father lost his job due to the Depression.
After the Depression he became a jeweler's apprentice, when he first met Gloria Gigante, his future wife.
In April 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy and entered boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to and served as a machinist's mate on the USS Sarasota (APA-204), an amphibious attack transport in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of the war, taking part in numerous invasions in the South Pacific. In January 1946, he was honorably discharged and came back to Chicago.
In May 1946 he married the love of his life, Gloria, and soon after went to trade school to become a carpenter. Not long after their second child was born, Carl, along with a partner, started Able Construction Company, building homes, apartments, office, retail, and industrial buildings.
After Gloria passed away much too soon in 1993, and having sold his company, he decided to design and build a home in Sugar Camp for retirement and to be close to his family and some favorite fishing spots.
Not long after settling in, he became very involved with the Rhinelander VFW, Post 3143, serving as part of the honor guard until he was 99. He so very much enjoyed the camaraderie of the VFW post.
He also loved fishing, working on home projects, driving, and volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital.
Carl is survived by his family that he loved so much; his two children, Mark Weidling (Beryl) of Glenview, Ill. and Patricia Stolar of Sugar Camp; his grandson, Tim (Amy) Stolar of Sugar Camp, along with five great-grandchildren, Jonah, Cody, Olivia, Cole, and Kaylee. Carl is also survived by his devoted friend Roberta Sullivan. He was proceeded in death by his parents and wife, and his son-in-law, Doug Stolar.
Memorials are being established in Carl's name for either the National Jewish Health at www.nationaljewish.org or the Honor Flight Network at www.honorflight.org.
Due to the present situation any services to be held in Rhinelander or in Skokie will be held at a later date.
Carl's remains will be laid to rest in Skokie, Ill. at the Memorial Park Cemetery next to his wife Gloria. You may leave your private condolences for the Weidling family at www.carlsonfh.com.
