Scott Meier, grand knight of the Knights of Columbus MacDonald O'Neill Council 2032 in Rhinelander, said the group was notified of the vandalism Monday. The damage appears to have been done with spray paint, and included adding a mask to the infant on the billboard with the words "wear a mask," "my body, my choice," "keep abortion safe," and "save the women."
According to their website, Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic fraternal service organization that promotes the Catholic view on public policy issues.
Meier said the council will replace the billboard.
"The Knights know people have different opinions on abortion, the perpetrators of the vandalism obviously see things differently," Meier said in a written statement. "However, the Knights are determined to protect the unborn children and will be working to replace the billboard."
He went on to say he personally forgives whomever did the damage. "I forgive them, and I ask that others forgive as well, to pray for hope that God can turn their hearts to be more productive and less destructive," Meier said. He also said that with everything going on in the world, division is not the answer.
"With all of the pain right now going on in our world, the destruction, sickness, drugs etc, I believe we need to get back to what is really important in life," Meier said in the statement. "Our greatest resource is each other. We work best as a team." Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact the sheriff's department at 715-361-5100.
