The new pickleball courts at Pioneer Park have already been put to use for a good cause.

Larry McKitrick and Lori Grinde, members of the Pioneer Pickleball Group, recently challenged local TV personalities Dan Hagen and Griffin Stroin to an exhibition match at the courts. What started as friendly banter over text messages turned into a wager between the two groups and then became an informal fundraiser for the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing.

"We decided to put our bet money in a donation bucket and pass it around the onlookers during the match with the proceeds being donated to NATH," McKitrick said in an email to the River News. The event raised $200.

Pictured, players in that match present the check to NATH Executive Director Tammy Modic. Pictured from left to right are McKitrick, Grinde, Modic and Hagen.

"Needless to say, the old and experienced crushed the young guys," McKitrick quipped, noting that Hagen is one-third his age. "We all had fun and NATH benefited."
