SDR committee approves proposed dome manager position
The operations and strategic planning committee discussed a proposal to create and fill a dome manager position whose sole responsibility would be to serve as a point of first contact for all dome-related inquiries from staff and the public. According to the job description included in the committee packet, this individual would report directly to superintendent Eric Burke.
"Even before I was brought on, one of the things that was brought to my attention was that with this amazing resource in our community, it will be important that we have someone who will be in charge of the many things with the dome," Burke told the committee.
The suggested job description and salary range Burke presented to the committee was developed after consulting with other districts and cities and learning how they handle the operation of large, multi-use field houses like the Greenheck Field House at D.C. Everest.
Burke pointed out that the community will also be using the dome and all scheduling and programming will have to be carefully integrated.
"The three big areas are school programming, how is the school going to be using it, how will the community use it and really come up with ideas and really make it happen on outside events, be it athletic events or other things that can use this great space," Burke explained.
"We're looking at this being year-round position, funded through Fund 80, community services," Burke said. "It will be an entry-level position, with some experience above entry-level. And skilled in the area of organizing and promoting and P.R. (public relations)"
When the administrative team got together to create the job description, it became clear the ideal candidate would be someone who can "come in with a lot of ideas and make this (dome) happen," Burke added.
The proposal to the committee included a salary range between $37,000 and $51,000 based on experience.
Committee chairman Mike Roberts appreciated the very detailed job description and the work the group put into it.
"Which, I think, will be very helpful for people to find, along with the comparable salaries at different places," Roberts noted.
In response to a question from board member Ron Lueneberg, the district's human resources director Michele Cornelius said what the district is offering for the dome position can't really be compared to the director of Greenheck Field House because there are additional duties.
"I did look at it, and it was relative," she said.
The committee ultimately approved a motion to send the job description and salary range to the full school board for consideration Aug. 17.
The panel also discussed a separate proposal to increase a part-time seasonal maintenance position to year-round to help with snow removal and cleaning/repairs in the Hodag Sports Complex.
Burke said director of buildings and grounds Jeff Zdroik said this person would not be "exclusive" to the Hodag Sports Complex.
"But the additional hours will allow Jeff to maintain the Hodag Sports Complex with a combination of his staff," Burke said.
Zdroik said there are currently five full time, year-round positions in the maintenance department and this change would increase that number to six.
Funding for part of the salary and benefits for this position could be billed to Fund 80 as well, noted district business manager Robert Thom.
The maintenance proposal was also forwarded on to the full board.
