The coronavirus pandemic did not stop the Northwood Golf Club ladies' league from holding its annual benefit for breast cancer awareness.

The league held its annual breast cancer night last Tuesday at the course. Due to the pandemic, the event was smaller in scale than in years past, but it was a beneficial night for the James Beck Cancer Center at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander.

"It was a little different. We usually have included our past members, invited them to come back. We have also invited the ladies from Inshalla (Country Club) to come and play with us in past years. We opted to eliminate all of that this year," said Carole Zierden, who helped organize the event for the league. "We just had our league, the ladies that are involved in our weekly play, there."

Not only was the field size smaller, Zierden noted that the league did not go out into the community to solicit prizes for raffles as it has in previous years.

Instead, league members brought in their own prizes to be raffled off.

Despite the limitations, Zierden said the group still managed to raise $1,928 , all of which will go to the James Back Cancer Center.

"We were a little bit down, down $500 from last year, but considering that we changed a lot of things this year due to the pandemic, I'm very pleased," she said.

"To think that we have $1,900 that we're going to give Jim Beck to buy wigs, and hairpieces for gentlemen, for people that can't afford them when they're going through the cancer treatment. We can help them and give them a little dignity when they're having the issues that they're facing," Zierden added.

The majority of the money raised came from raffles as well as events held during last Tuesday's event. Additionally, as the group has done in the past, it set up a gambling hole during a night of men's league play at the course, raising almost $500.

A new feature helped to account for the rest of the funds raised.

"We had a giving tree," Zierden said. "Every lady who came and wanted to do a donation could do a donation in honor of someone, or in memory of someone. That was new. We had never done that before. That was a big success. We raised $875 just in the donations on the giving tree."

The group wore face masks during the round, most of them made by one of the members of the league. The event was a nine-hole scramble, with a socially-distanced dinner at the course's Whipsaw Bar & Grill afterward.

"We got to mix around with other people. We don't necessarily get to play each team during the summer season. We got to be with other people, which was great," Zierden said. "The most important thing is we tired to do it as safely as we could with the situation that we're in. We need to take care of each other when we're in this time of trouble and confusion that we're all in. Hopefully everybody is staying safe."

Since 2009, the group has raised $17,250 for different cancer organizations, including $13,200 for James Beck Cancer Center. The Ties that Bind Us cancer support group in Tomahawk and Susan G. Komen have also benefited from the event.

"I'm glad that everyone could come out and play and it was a beautiful evening. We were truly blessed to have the night that we had," Zierden said.
