For local nonprofits such as the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH), operator of the Frederick Place homeless shelter in Rhinelander, donated dollars collected through fundraisers are a vital to meeting operational costs. While many of these fundraisers have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some will be held at a later date and in an improvised format.

Frederick Place is a 16-bed emergency temporary shelter which provides safe housing and basic needs to families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness in our area.

According to its website, NATH was established in August of 2009 and works to promote public awareness of homelessness by partnering with local resource agencies and educating the community.

Tammy Modic, executive director of NATH-Frederick Place, explained that the organization's fundraising goal for 2020 is to raise $105,000. But since many of their regular fundraisers had to be postponed, their team is working diligently to organize a number of fundraisers in the coming weeks in order to meet that goal.

Modic said that donated dollars collected through these fundraising campaigns help cover the cost of utilities, household maintenance, insurance and security at Frederick Place, as well as salaries for staff and all other necessities which support the residents during their stay.

"All of our dollars stay 100% local and go towards the operations of Frederick Place," Modic explained.

NATH organized a #GivingTuesdayNow campaign in May and in mid-July, NATH - Frederick Place put on a series of back-to-back-to-back fundraisers.

On July 17, CT's Deli hosted a FUNdnight with proceeds benefiting NATH - Frederick Place.

Modic said CT's Deli frequently hosts fundraisers for nonprofits throughout the year, which helps organizations like NATH-Frederick Place collect local donations.

The 10th annual Bill Miller Memorial Golf Scramble benefiting NATH-Frederick Place was originally scheduled to be held on May 31, Modic said, but it was postponed to July 19 and was held at the Northwoods Golf Club.

Modic said the golf scramble had only 50% participation compared to last year, which caused a 50% decrease in the amount of funds raised. However, she said there was a silver living: COVID-19 changed the format of how they served the meal, which was a "positive benefit," Modic said, and one they hope to implement in future years.

A hot dog and brat sale at Trig's benefiting NATH - Frederick Place was held July 22-24.

Modic said this fundraiser was quite a success, considering they sold 189 brats and 50 hot dogs on the last day of the fundraiser, and over the three-day period, food sales and tips brought in just shy of $3,000.

Modic added that delivering the hot dogs and brats to local businesses was also beneficial to the success of this event.

While these fundraisers have come and gone, there are more to come during the month of August.

On Aug. 8, NATH - Frederick Place will host their first Boats N' Boards fundraiser with sponsorship from Shoeder's RV & Marine.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. the day of the event at any of the four participating locations: Backwaters Bar & Grill, Flyin' Finn, Jailhouse and Pine Harbor.

"That's kind of like a poker run on water," Modic explained. "Individuals will register at one of the four establishments and throughout the day, go to each establishment and get a card punched... When their card is completely full, they'll leave it at one of the four establishments. Then at 6 o'clock, we'll collect all of the cards that are punched and bring them to the middle of the water to one of our NATH boats."

Pre-registration is $15 per person, which includes a $10 meal coupon and can koozie; registration the day of the event will be $20. Those who fill their cards will be entered to win a grand prize drawing of $500.

"The other way individuals can support that event is to become a $100 event sponsor," Modic added. "They will be registered to win a $500 gift certificate from Shoeder's RV & Marine should they provide us with $100 sponsorship. All of the registration and sponsorship [information] is available on our website."

Pastor Rod Ankrom also announced that on Aug. 8, Calvary Baptist Church will host its 12th annual Neighborhood Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Calvary will have its own table of vintage items.

The proceeds from sales of those items will benefit NATH - Frederick Place, but other vendors interested in participating are also welcome. (For more information, contact Calvary Baptist Church at 715-362-4792.)

"That's one of the very neat things that happens in our community," Modic commented. "There are many times that there are fundraisers being put on by other organizations or individuals on our behalf, and I don't know about them until the money shows up... It's very cool."

The next fundraiser set to take place benefiting NATH - Frederick Place is the Electronic Recycling (E-Cycling) event on Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at Charter NEX Films.

"E-cycle is a partnership with the Good News Project out of Wausau," Modic explained. "People can bring in any item that plugs in that isn't a major appliance. They will pay $0.40 per pound on the majority of the items, but there are a few exceptions. Once the profit is determined by Good News, NATH then receives 25% of the profit."

The remainder of the proceeds support the Good News Project in the greater Rhinelander and Wausau areas, and e-cycling events like these help keep toxic materials out of local landfills.

"Their payment is tax deductible because both entities are nonprofits," Modic added.

Those interested in discarding their electronics - such as computers, monitors, speakers, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, computer parts, fax machines, televisions, DVD players, gaming systems, cellphones, laptops and more - are asked to remain in their vehicle to utilize the pick up/drop off location at Charter NEX Films.

"The first year we did this event in 2018, we filled three semi trucks full of electronics," Modic said. "The second year we filled one and a half semis, and this year... I would not be surprised if we went back to the three semi trucks full."

Additionally, on Aug. 22 the Woodpecker Bar & Grill will sponsor the third annual Ride For The Homeless event benefiting NATH - Frederick Place. ATVs, UTVs and motorcycles are welcome to participate. Pre-registration is available on their website.

The cost to participate is $20 per driver and $10 per passenger and includes a bandana, meal and chance to win the grand prize, or a meal only is $10.

All participants will meet at Fisher's Bar in Parrish at 9 a.m. The ride will start with a blessing of the riders at 10 a.m. ATVs and UTVs will have a special route with assigned stops in which they are to get their cars punched. Motorcycles will have a different route, but all will eventually finish at the Woodpecker for a boxed meal to go and a 50/50 raffle drawing.

Although these fundraisers will go on, the annual Summer Raffle benefitting NATH - Frederick Place, which typically runs from Memorial Day to Cranberry Fest, has been canceled.

Because most of those raffles took place at festivals in the five- county area NATH serves, and many of those festivals have been canceled due to COVID-19, those funds will not be a source of donations this year.

For this reason, Modic said the upcoming fundraisers are even more important in order to meet the annual fundraising goal.
