Hodag Farmers Market draws an early crowd

Hodag Farmers Market draws an early crowd

By Cassie Shefchik-

It's great to watch vendors set up their stalls on Saturday morning. It amazes me how quick and efficient some of them are in tackling the task at hand.

But. There's always a but.

The vendors usually take one of two routes from the park road into our assigned area of the park. While vendors are setting up, cars are often coming from the main one and driving down the midway strip. It can get a bit chaotic at times which is why we open at 8 a.m. and not earlier. This is so vendors have a chance to get to the park and set up before 8. The market does have a rule that all vendors must arrive before 8 but now and then things happen like a flat tire or a tree across the road. Remember, not all vendors live 5 miles from the park.

Years ago no vendor was allowed to sell anything until a bell was rung signaling the opening of the market. It was done every week of the selling season like clockwork. It kept control and gave everyone a chance to arrive, focus on the necessary work needing to be done, and set up. On occasion customers might have to be escorted off to one side so a vendor could arrive at their designated spot. But, last week many customers arrived very early. The vendors were very glad to see them as they literally are our bread and butter. But, entry into our area as well as setting up was slightly hampered.

The market members ask customers to please wait to arrive shortly before 8 in the morning, like 7:55 or 7:50. We understand vegetables sometimes sell out quickly, but there is still quite a selection at 10 and 11.

During last week's stroll through the market I found bell peppers a good 5 inches long, more tomatoes (not just the smaller cherry tomato size), and corn!

Fresh mushrooms are still found at the Hodag Farmers' Market as well as locally roasted coffee beans.

Don't forget to check out the canned goods: jams, jellies, apple butter, sauerkraut, salsa, sauces, pickled produce and more.

The Hodag Farmers' Market is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park.
