Fred is survived by his wife Carol (Kucaba), his daughters Susan (Chris Galtress) Hoerchler and Catherine (Edwin) Nance, his son Michael (Beth) Hoerchler, his grandchildren Callie and Lindsey, his sisters Patricia (Wayne) Eatman and Raelene (Jeff) Andrews, brother-in-law Dennis (Sandy) Kucaba, sister-in-law Geraldine "Chickee" (Alvin) Bunkoske, his 102-year-old mother-in-law Geraldine Kucaba, nieces, nephews, and other family. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law Edward Kucaba and his parents.
Fred lived on the Byrtek farm in Deerbrook from 1948 through 1951 where he attended Little Chicago, a one-room schoolhouse a mile from the farm. He then resided with his parents in Villa Park, Ill. attending St. Alexander grade school and Willowbrook High School.
Fred was introduced to Carol by her brother Dennis when they were just 13. He married the love of his life in 1964 and he and Carol were about to celebrate their 56th anniversary. Fred was a tireless worker who had been employed full time by Triumph Twist Drill but also owned and operated the Three G's Resort with Carol for more than 30 years. He retired as Safety Director in the late '90s and eventually sold the resort as condo units. That is when Fred finally had the opportunity to fully embrace his passions, spending as much time as possible with his family at the cabin he designed and built in Sioux Narrows, Ontario, Canada enjoying lots and lots of fishing on Lake of the Woods. Fred first discovered Sioux Narrows when he was a boy and his parents built a cabin on the same lake. This began an enduring bond with the area. In his later years, he and Carol escaped the Wisconsin cold spending some winter months in Gulf Shores, Ala. Fred was a true road warrior preferring driving to flying and would drive back and forth to Canada multiple times per year, down to Florida or Gulf Shores and over to North Carolina to visit his daughter and back again. He took great joy in the hunt whether finding pontoon boats to fix up and sell, Harleys to fix up and ride or appreciating nature while deer hunting or fishing. He was delighted to see his granddaughters not only take to, but excel at, fishing and hunting, too. Fred never met a stranger and made lifelong friends wherever he went including many, many of the Three Gs Resort "regulars," people throughout Rhinelander and some dear friends in Canada. Fred had a generous spirit and was always willing to help friends and strangers alike. He was a loving husband and father, the rock of the family that all would seek out for guidance and support.
Fred was a faithful servant of God through the Catholic church and was proud to send his children to what was then Rhinelander Catholic Central and see his granddaughters also attend the same school now known as Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School.
Given the present situation, private family services will be held with Father Maria Vallabhaneni officiating. Interment will follow in the Northland Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are being established in Fred's name for the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Rhinelander and St. Jude Children's Hospital.
