Lights of the Northwoods group lighting up symbol of hope
The Lights of the Northwoods has lit up a single display at Stafford Field, a candy cane pole, in what the organization's president Shawn Will said is an attempt to comfort people as well as show support to the "frontline medical personnel."
"A couple of our members thought of it last week, and we have always been promoting the fact that this is a grand community event; that it takes the community to do Lights of the Northwoods," Will said. "We're not in this community just in December, we're in this community all year long. Our kids are in soccer, they go to schools, our families work and play in the community. So we wanted to come up with something that still shows that we are part of the community."
The board quickly agreed that turning on one of the three 80-foot candy cane poles at the baseball field would be the easiest way to accomplish this goal.
"And we'll keep the light on each nigh until the Safer at Home (order) is over and we're all back to what we consider normal," Will said. "Whatever that's going to be after this."
Will said City of Rhinelander parks, buildings and grounds director Jeremy Biolo approved the display.
"I know this doesn't make a dent in what's going on and some of the things that people are dealing with, but maybe it will give a little hope and community spirit as we go through this," Will said.
The display is on a timer set to be lit between 5 and 9 p.m.
