JWMS swimmers second in Point

The James Williams Middle School girls' swim team finished second in a quadrangular meet in Stevens Point on Tuesday, finishing only behind Stevens Point's P.J. Jacobs Junior High School in the competition. Rhinelander bested Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids in the team standings.

Eighth-grader Abi Winnicki secured the two victories on the night for the Hodags, winning both the 50-yard butterfly (28.30 seconds) and the 50 breaststroke (33.24).

The quartet of Margaret Lambert, Winnicki, Ellyse Younker and Claire Caselton took second in a pair of relays, finishing runner-up in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle events. The JWMS crew was edged by a mere 0.02 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay.

Lambert added a runner-up finish for Rhinelander in the 50 backstroke and took fourth in the 50 freestyle. Younker was third in the 50 butterfly and fourth in the 100 IM. Emma Houg took fourth in the 200 freestyle, Abbie Ames was fifth in the 100 individual medley, Caselton was fifth in the 100 freestyle and Sam Sundby took fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

JWMS added three other top five finishes in relays. The Hodags placed fourth with their B entry in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. It was Sadie Houghton, Sundby, Houg and Payton Seidl for the Hodags in the 200 medley while Lily Thorsen, Hailey Zubricky, Ames and Alicia Lentine swam the 200 free relay.

The Hodags placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with the squad of Houg, Thorsen, Camilla Gruett and Seidl.

Middle school harriers compete in GNC meet

The James Williams Middle School cross country team was in Eagle River on Tuesday for the Great Northern Conference middle school meet, hosted by Northland Pines. The Hodag girls placed third out of five complete teams while the Hodag boys were fifth in a five-team field.

Sophie Miljevich for Rhinelander was the fastest seventh-grader in the field and finished third overall in the two-mile (3.2-kilometer) race, finishing with a time of 13 minutes, 4.7 seconds. Fellow JWMS seventh-grader Reese Gehrig was 10th overall (14:20.3).

Luna Grage was 14th for JWMS (14:56.0), Leah Jamison was 20th (15:24.2), followed by Lexi Bishop in 22nd (15:33.7), Kayla Skull in 23rd (15:42.1) and Lynnea Kivi in 25th (15:47.8). Jamison was the only eighth-grader in the Hodags' top seven.

Sixth-grader Jackson Fuss recorded the best finish for the JWMS boys, taking 22nd overall (14:45.2). Payton McFue was 22nd (14:51.6), Bobby Gibbs was 31st (15:35.1), Iain Rumney was 35th (15:53.3), Zacha King finished 41st (16:10.9), Nahzeair Boykin was 52nd (17:53.9) and Holden Schmitz finished 53rd (17:58.5).

Medford was the only GNC school that did not participate in the race. Antigo did not have enough runners to field a complete boys' team and Northland Pines did not have enough runners on the girls' side.
