He was born on Oct. 6, 1949, in Wausau, to the late Norman and Dorothy (Pagenkopf) Berna.
James was an active participant at Headwaters, Inc. in Rhinelander from March 1975 until his retirement on March 15, 2010. During his years at Headwaters, he worked in multiple areas including the auto detailing program, confidential document shredding, woodworking, and firewood programs as well as on contracts for Foster and Smith, Northsound, and Twist Drill.
James was an avid Packers and Brewers fan. He enjoyed watching old western movies, Johnny Cash songs, playing practical jokes, and singing karaoke.
James is survived by his brother, Bob (Linda) Berna of Rhinelander; a niece, Tammy (Tyrone) Espinoza of El Paso, Texas; four great-nieces and nephews and four great-great-nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of James' life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank James' caregivers and the Ascension Hospice team for their care and compassion.
