By Cassie Shefchik-
We've all been there. We've all seen something so beautiful it held our gaze and took our breath away. Something that made us stare in wonder.
There are many things that capture attention and cause a person to pause and drink in the beauty. A sunrise. A sunset. Green scenic overlooks. Mountains. Old castles. Ruins. The colors of autumn. The face of a child. Colorful stones along a shoreline. A perfect blossom. The list goes on and on.
For me, such a moment happened at the market when I saw two of the most unusual plants placed together: Brassica oleracea and Daucus carota.
In every day terms they are known as ornamental kale and Queen Anne's lace.
I know what kale looks like, edible and ornamental. I plant them every year. Actually, I plant hundreds of them every year. But I've never seen them look like rosebuds!
I've spied Queen Anne's lace along roadways. They are always white. But last week I saw some that were red and pink and almost maroon.
The kale and Queen Anne's were put together into a most beautiful bouquet.
I may have startled the customer that was walking around with the bouquet. I'm kind of bold that way. If I see something that captures my interest I will walk up, tap the person on the shoulder, and inquire about said item. I've found it's always better to inquire than speculate.
Come on down to Pioneer Park on Saturday between 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and find the beauty local vendors grew, produced, and crafted. It just might take your breath away.
