Apple season at the Hodag Farmers Market

Apple season at the Hodag Farmers Market
Apple season at the Hodag Farmers Market

By Cassie Shefchik-

Strolling through the Hodag Farmers Market last week I was delighted with the amount of produce being offered. There were cabbages, Brussels sprouts, pumpkins (for baking or carving) and other winter squash, corn, kale, Swiss chard, lots of tomato varieties, cucumbers, peppers (hot and sweet), onions, lettuce, beets, carrots, and so much more.

Apples are starting to make an appearance and more will arrive in the coming weeks.

Vendors who sell apples will let you know which ones are good for fresh eating, saucing, and baking.

New Orchard had two different varieties to choose from and I was told more will be coming. There are a couple of late season vendors that sell predominately apples.

Chrysanthemums also made an appearance last week along with some perennials and fruiting shrubs from Hanson's Garden Village. Don't forget, perennials, trees, and shrubs can be planted this time of year as most of the plant energy goes to the roots, which is important for a healthy plant next year, and not the leaves and blossoms.

The canners have been working overtime preserving the season's bounty. Jams, jellies, apple butters, pickles vegetables, sauerkraut, and salsas are showing up on a lot of market tables.

There is a mystery afoot.

It's not uncommon for someone to forget something at a vendors' stall. We all do it from time to time at other places of business. I have. One time I found a pair of shoes left at the park after market hours which belonged to a vendor. I gifted the shoes back in a most prestigious and regal fashion the following week. They were thrilled to have the lost items returned as well as my presentation.

But now there's a new mystery. Someone left a set of keys on a vendor's table. The Hodag Farmers Market would really like to give them back to the owner. If you are missing a set of keys, please contact me at the market. If you know of anyone who mentioned their keys went missing please tell them to contact me at the market.

The Hodag Farmers Market is held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pioneer Park.
