Marie Janet Gehrig, age 87, of Rhinelander, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Aug. 30, 2019 at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital, in Rhinelander. She was born on Nov. 15, 1931, in Medford, to Gilbert and Mary (Gallistel) Rhyner.

Marie was raised in the Stetsonville area and attended schools there. After her schooling, Marie's family moved to Westboro where she worked for her parents in their family business for a number of years. It was there that she met her future husband Myron "Lou" Gehrig and they were married on Oct. 23, 1954 in Westboro. They enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage. The couple moved to Rhinelander where they raised their family. Marie and Lou always looked forward to watching their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their many sports activities.

Marie and her family were also members of the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church since moving to Rhinelander. Her love of her Lord and Savior could be seen in how she raised her family and how she cared for her friends and others.

Marie was an excellent cook and she enjoyed cooking for everyone. She was also an excellent gardener and maintained a large garden for many years. Marie also enjoyed reading, bowling, fishing, and watching any sporting event, especially if her family was involved. She loved playing cards and played solitaire every day. Most of these activities she could participate in at the family cabin which was her favorite place. She loved spending time on the deck just looking out at the lake.

Marie is survived by her husband, Myron "Lou" Gehrig; her children, Brian (Nancy) Gehrig, Gwen Wanty, and Brock (Victoria) Gehrig; her grandchildren, Ryan (Heather), Ben (Eva), Chad (Christine), Alicia (Brad), Brett, and Katrina (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Grady, Dillon, Bradley, Caleb, Jacob, Connor, Reese, and Donte; her sister, Norma (Mike) Grittner; her brothers, Gordon (Irene) Rhyner, Alan (Dorothy) Rhyner, and Everett (Elizabeth) Rhyner; a brother-in-law, Richard "Dick" Johnson; nieces, nephews, other family, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Diane Johnson; an infant brother, Russell; and a son-in-law, James Wanty Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019 at the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church with Father Michael Tupa officiating. Interment will follow in the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery. A memorial will be established in Marie's name and any gifts may be directed to her family.
