This year, homeroom advisors at James Williams Middle School are leading teams of homeroom students in a variety of service learning projects, including one that involves a scarecrow contest.

According to a school district press release, Mr. Carpenter's homeroom class decided to work on creating a scarecrow for the annual Hanson's Garden Village Scarecrow Contest. His homeroom team worked on creating this display during several of their morning enrichment periods.

The students used donated items such as hats, gloves, shoes, scarves, pumpkins, gourds, and plastic bags to create the scarecrow.

On the morning of Thursday, Oct. 3, Mr. Carpenter's team traveled to Hanson's Garden Village on County Highway G to assemble the scarecrow while adding appropriate props. The scarecrow will be on display through Oct. 26.

"Since this is a contest, there is a possibility of Mr. Carpenter's homeroom winning a cash prize," the release states. "If they were to win, the winnings would be donated to a local charity of the homeroom team's choice. Hanson's will also be sponsoring a Family Fall Fest on Oct. 19 with a variety of different activities. This would make for a great day to visit, view Mr. Carpenter's homeroom scarecrow, and best of all, vote for their scarecrow!"
