By Cassie Shefchik-
Farmers' markets have always been a mainstay for agriculture. This is a known fact throughout history. Those that have know-how and space sell the extras to those that don't. It was one way of getting fresh produce, eggs, and meat (also milk) to the city dwellers. Some went door to door hawking their products while other went to more commercial areas or followed a specific route to follow with pre-assigned customers.
With only one more farmers' market for the season here is a partial list of what one might find at the Hodag Farmers Market this Saturday: pumpkins, gourds, winter squash, summer squash, carrots, onions, potatoes, kale, peppers, corn, tomatoes, herbs, microgreens, flowers (bouquets and plants), Brussels sprouts, corn stalks, jumper cables, eggs, pork, goat cheese, bread, cookies, wreaths, hats, mittens, rugs, a framed portrait of myself, bees' wax, apple butter, pickles, jams, jellies, salsa, sauerkraut, and maple syrup. There are many more items that I failed to remember from last week. And I may had added a few gaffes to see if you were paying attention.
This Saturday promises to be nicer than the last two weeks with temperatures headed into the 50s. The long range forecast, at the time of this writing, suggests a possibility of rain but with warmer temperatures and a lack of other festivals, it's likely more vendors will be at the market.
I hope to see the last market of the year have a festive air so I have decided to don my crown and hand out tiaras to some of the vendors to wear. If you should feel the need to also attire yourself in a festive headdress, I will openly applaud you.
Thus, as this is my last market report of the year, quirky as it is, I truly hope to see many from the community show up at Pioneer Park, on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Have a look around, ask questions, wear a festive head ornament, and see what our humble hometown market has to offer.
