WRAP encourages nonprofessional, student and emerging artists to create and exhibit their work across the state of Wisconsin. Run by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Continuing Studies, WRAP has a history of 79 years.
"WRAP was developed for students and recreational artists to have a venue to publicly express themselves through there amazing artwork," observed local WRAP coordinator and artist Christine Metropulos-Friedrich. "I'm very excited about this year's entrants, as many are displaying their work for the first time and receiving awards."
Last year was the first WRAP show Metropulos-Friedrich herself had entered.
Metropulos-Friedrich also is a member of the Lakeland Art League, a social organization promoting the visual arts in the lakes area of North Central Wisconsin that offers educational programs, workshops, scholarships and art events.
The WRAP will be on display at the Howard Young Art Gallery throughout the month of October. It features 50 pieces, from 21 artists. A juried exhibit, several were chosen to move on for the annual State Art Exhibit in Madison yet this year. A number of pieces also were selected for honorable mentions.
"Winning an award inspired me with a renewed confidence to pursue my dream of creating art full time," Metropulos-Friedrich relayed. "I chose to coordinate our regional program so that I can inspire other budding artists of all ages to do the same. The beauty and awe of art is in the eye of the beholder, both the viewer and creator."
WRAP provides statewide art workshops and exhibits for nonprofessional artists that meet and display throughout the year. It began in 1940 with the intent of encouraging creative growth, which continues today through noncompetitive exhibits in regional communities. It also includes a demonstration or lecture during the regional workshop by a professional artist and an exhibition judge available to answer questions on design, composition, and technique during a group critique and evaluative discussion.
Sponsored by the Lakeland Art League, the local WRAP workshop is slated for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2, where participants will create their own piece of abstract art during a workshop and presentation by artist Bryon Black. There is a $5 fee for the general fee and it is free for participating artists.
