New bookshop and debut author team up to celebrate books and Three Lakes history
Cameron will be at the store from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 signing books and leading children's activities. She will give a reading at 2 p.m. and will have historical photos on hand of the original Northernaire Resort and Showboat lounge, according to a press release announcing the appearance.
"We've lost so many independent bookstores over the years," Cameron noted in the release. "So I'm excited to be a part of this grand opening. I'm especially happy to celebrate in Three Lakes where the idea for my book began."
Cameron found the spark for her novel's setting when she was a graduate student and worked a summer job as the curator at the Three Lakes Historical Museum. "There was so much interesting history there," she says. "Carl Marty and his Showboat grabbed my imagination and didn't let go. Finally, I knew I had to set an adventure there."
Mind Chimes Bookshop is the new adventure of Laura Lowry, a former pediatrician and adjunct professor of anatomy and physiology.
"A year ago, I was feeling the void of living in a town without a bookstore, and decided to make a contribution," Lowry said. "I've redirected my focus to my love of books, but I'll continue to serve as an advocate for children and preventive health care by offering a strong selection of books in those categories. The bookshop will include books for all other ages and interests as well."
Cameron and Lowry hope the Oct.19 event will be a fitting celebration of books and reading as well as a nod to their mutual respect for the robust history of Northwoods entrepreneurs.
"Plus, it will be fun," Cameron said. "The main character in my book loves comics, so I'm going to set up a comic-making station as well as a book scavenger hunt. My target audience is probably 7-13, but I'm excited to celebrate with all ages!"
"Maybe a Mermaid" was released with Macmillan/Farrar, Straus, & Giroux Books for Young Readers in March 2019. Cameron's next book, "A Dog-Friendly Town," is scheduled for publication in May 2020. More information at www.josephinecameron.com.
Mind Chimes Bookshop is located at 1766 Superior Street in downtown Three Lakes and will open in early October.
The store hours will be Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.mindchimesbookshop.com.
