By Cassie Shefchik-
There are three more Saturdays of the Hodag Farmers Market for the year. Our last day will be Saturday, Oct. 19. I'll keep repeating this throughout the article.
October is here! My favorite month of the year. There are many reasons why I adore the month of October. The weather is not too hot and not too cold. Gardens are still producing. There's very few mosquitoes. The heavy canning season is winding down. There's so many colors showing up in nature. It's the month of my birth.
A plethora of vegetables have been seen weekly at the Hodag Farmers Market: beets, carrots, squash, mushrooms, chaga, microgreens, potatoes, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, kale, chard, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, radishes, and many more wonderful produce.
Produce vendors are busy harvesting and making sure their produce is safe from colder temperatures. Now is the time for all gardeners to really watch the weather reports in case there's a chance of frost.
There are three more Hodag Farmers Market for the year. We will be back next May.
Some of the vendors who sell canned goods are ramping up their stock. Most have freshly canned items brought down to market on a weekly basis. At the same time they are also filling their pantries for next year's market. I often juice the season's bounty for next year. Others stock their freezers. Another has been busy canning up homemade apple sauce for future apple butter.
The last market of the year at Pioneer Park will be held Oct. 19 (two days after my birthday).
Many seasonal decorating items can also be found at the market including corn stalks, flower bouquets, pumpkins, gourds, chrysanthemums, and wreaths/swags.
Don't forget, there are also vendors that sell fresh eggs, pork, cheese, baked goods, and handicrafts.
Come down to Pioneer Park for the first of three October markets this Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
